On Thursday, North Korea issued a statement denying that it fired any weaponry in the area and said that only 'normal blasting' from construction work had taken place. The North's state news agency cited an unidentified official in working-level military talks with the South as saying that South Korean authorities had spread 'misinformation that the army of the DPRK perpetrated a shelling 'provocation.' ' DPRK refers to North Korea's official name, Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said that North Korea launched a total of five artillery rounds in two bursts Wednesday toward the Northern Limit Line that divides the Koreas in the Yellow Sea. Soldiers confirmed that one shell from each round landed near the border and the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong that Pyongyang attacked last year, the ministry said.
