We have followed in detail the metal process path all the way from the furnace so as to demonstrate why the various stages are carried out in order to achieve an acceptable metal quality, which will meet or exceed the final end-customer’s expectations. This article will now address casting the first of the three principal products from Aluminium Casthouses – namely Slab (or Rolling Ingot) Casting in Vertical Direct Chill (VDC) Pits. The last two articles in this series, will cover the subjects of VDC Billet Casting and Continuous Strip Casting.

All of the processing work which has been already undertaken upstream of the casting pit now has to be converted into a quality cast product, which can be sold. Slab casting covers a wide range of alloys and sizes for several different applications. 1xxx, 2xxx, 3xxx, 4xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx and 8xxx alloys are all cast into slab form for applications which require them to be rolled to sheet, plate or foil. It is worth remembering at this point that not all slab applications require the same stringent quality of metal. As a result, additional furnace treatment, extra filtration and enhanced degassing are required for slab destined for use in high-specification products, whereas a standard treatment is acceptable for slabs going for general use products.
